Can a mayor actually do much? (apart from be a total arse.)

England doesn't have a federal state system so city councils are quite similar in powers to state governments. The mayor of London has indeed had a big impact by introducing things like the congestion charge, free public transport for pensioners and many other green initiatives. It remains too be seen if Johnson will take any of these away.

Wow, ick. What is it with people? I mean, seriously, what is it that they are thinking? I just don't get it.

It was outer London, the suburbs - places like Kellyville in Sydney terms - that elected Boris. Inner London turned out in huge numbers to try to stop it, but they were outnumbered by people who think that driving your little darlings 500m to school in a 4x4 is a human right.
