I read US blogs complaining about the commercialization of Halloween and think that at the moment its pretty nice. It's a community building event when all the young kids can wander the streets.

In our neighbourhood, somebody letterboxes a few days before in warning, suggesting that you put out a ribbon if you're happy to be trick or treated. It works really well. And the kids aren't yet too greedy about it all...

This week I was helping a child I tutor complete a quiz about Halloween. One of the questions was about the origins of the tradition. I was surprised and relieved to find that it's origins are Gaelic. It made me feel a bit better about the commercialisations aspects.
