When I'm not admonishing my elder son for his behaviour, I'm telling him to 'loosen up'. He is terribly frightened of breaking rules. Permissable disobedience is a hard thing to teach.

I think what I like about Nicholas and what probably seems alien to my son is the picture of a world where the children live among children and adults are a separate entity which tries to keep them under control or out of sight - the kids are in constant struggle against the adults. The kids go off to vacant lots to play impromptu games of soccer, something today's kids are unlikely to get to do. It reminds me of the world of my childhood when there were so many adult-imposed rules and yet a lot of adult-free time.
