I hate the word 'icon'.
Didn't always hate it - not until I moved back to Australia and was subjected to the zillion or so great Aussie icons who, according to the great Aussie media, light up our lives on a daily basis.
Aussie icons can be buildings. (Royal Newcastle Hospital - who would've known?) They can be places. (Even entire towns.) They can be people. (Carl Carboni.) (Who?) They can be garments. (Hats.) They can even be animals. (At this time of year, you're bound to hear a breathless TV presenter refer to bilbies as great Aussie icons.)
There are a lot of things I detest about the misuse of language in this country, but the ubiquity of icon is right up there.
Just call me an iconoclastic un-Australian snob.
