I think I may have offended a friend.
We were at her place for brunch on the weekend and she told us she was going to Melbourne soon to accept an award - an award for her state department's annual report.
"You mean, there are awards for annual reports?" I said incredulously. She confirmed that there are.
I began to laugh. And laugh. I couldn't stop. My face seized into a rictus of hysterical giggling. I could see my friend looking puzzled and perhaps upset but couldn't control myself. The idea of awards for annual reports struck me as ridiculous, like a storyline straight out of The Office. It's literally decades since I've been stoned, but that's how I felt. And I couldn't see why no one else thought it was funny.
In fact, the idea of a committee set up specifically to assess annual reports still makes me smile. But I'm wondering if I should send my friend an email to apologise, in case I hurt her feelings.
